The Hojo (Abbot’s Quarters) was originally the residence of the abbot. The building is also called the Ryuoden (Hall of the Dragon King), and enshrines a statue of the Buddha with a jeweled crown.
The hall’s simple, functional architecture stands in sharp contrast to the opulence of the Karamon Gate. Today, the hall is used for ceremonial purposes and for hosting public zazen (seated meditation) workshops. Visitors are welcome to walk around the verandah of the building.
Like the Somon (Main Gate), the Hojo was moved to Kenchoji Temple from Hanju Zanmai-in Temple in Kyoto in 1940. It was once the main hall of Hanju Zanmai-in, and at one time was even used as a school building.
